Meet the Team: Kevin

Kevin (he/him) is a member of Sparrow’s Customer Experience team. Let’s get to know Kevin!

How did you get to where you are?

Before Sparrow, I worked with a sports education organization managing blended sports and STEAM programs at local elementary schools. My favorite part (beyond playing soccer with the kiddos) was being a part of something that made a huge impact on so many different lives. Having a program that encouraged students to be active and learn about STEAM topics attributed to higher attendance rates, greater participation in class, and most importantly, it was something that students looked forward to every day.

When I came across the Leave Specialist role at Sparrow, I saw similarities between the two roles. I wanted to continue to be a part of something that makes a positive impact, helps others, and is full of fascinating challenges. Sparrow does exactly that for the people we work with!

What is a fun fact about you?

In college, I took a bowling class (twice because I enjoyed it so much) and once bowled a 250. Our team still didn’t make it to the championship, but we had so much fun!

Why did you join Sparrow?

Definitely the team. Throughout the interview process, I got the opportunity to meet so many different people, many of whom I work closely with to this day. Everybody was incredibly kind and the process was thoughtful and intentional. It is clear that everyone has a true desire to help people through the leave process, and we get a rewarding sense of accomplishment from the experience.

What is your favorite part of working at Sparrow?

The opportunity to become involved in many different aspects of the company. A while back, I expressed interest in becoming a part of the New Hire Onboarding team. Now, my colleague Sophie and I are lucky enough to be one of the first faces you meet on your first day at Sparrow, helping guide our new “Sparrows” through the training process. This wouldn’t have been possible if the team wasn’t open to providing space to explore my interests!

What do you know now about working at Sparrow that you wish you knew on your first day?

It’s OK to not know everything about leave management right away. Starting at Sparrow with no leave management experience can be a bit daunting at first. However, realizing the complexity of leave helped me to understand that I needed to give myself space and time to learn the concepts and work with them before flying solo. Beyond that, I never truly feel like I’m working on my own at Sparrow because the team is so collaborative and supportive.

What’s the last show you binge-watched?

Avatar the Last Airbender! In my opinion, it is the greatest show ever made. I watched it when I was young and seeing it now is a completely different experience. I fell back in love with the characters, incredible art and animation style, and powerful character arcs.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?

New Zealand. To be fair, I was only 3 years old and have scattered memories. However, from my limited memory and old photos, it’s a stunning place to visit and I’d love to go back.
