Effective January 1, 2025, Rhode Island House Bill 7171 will amend the Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI) program.

Since its enactment in 2014, the TCI program has provided coverage for bonding with a new child or caring for a family member with a serious health condition. The program has historically seen increases in these benefits, and this new legislation introduces a series of improvements that will unfold over the next two years, enhancing both the duration of benefits and financial support for dependents.

  • Effective January 1, 2025, the weekly dependency allowance minimum will increase from $10 to $20 and TCI benefits will be extended from 6 weeks to 7 weeks.
  • TCI benefits will further increase from 7 weeks to 8 weeks beginning January 1, 2026.
