Healthcare company Thirty Madison uses Sparrow for full-service employee leave management.
Thirty Madison exists to deliver on healthcare’s biggest opportunities: access and affordability; patient outcomes; and patient experience. Each of its specialized brands is focused on specific chronic condition areas, and thoughtfully designed to support the unique needs of its community with personalized treatments and care. With empathy at the heart of its innovation, its proprietary care model empowers hundreds of thousands of people with ongoing conditions with the accessible, effective treatments across a lifetime of care.
Thirty Madison’s brands deliver personalized care and treatment for specific condition areas: Nurx for women’s health, Keeps for men’s hair loss, Cove for migraines, and Facet for high-acuity dermatology conditions.
Thirty Madison’s mission is to transform healthcare by making it more accessible and affordable, delivering better outcomes, and creating an unparalleled experience for patients—and they’re making good on their goal. Since its inception, the company has treated over 3 million patients. In the last year, the company affirmed its commitment to women’s health, launching its women’s hair loss service, delivering continued care to thousands who would otherwise be without care from The Pill Club, and most recently, offering the first over-the-counter birth control pill to patients.
As the company continues to grow and serve even more patients, Thirty Madison has taken action behind the scenes to support their employees and streamline their HR processes. One of the impactful changes they’ve made has been partnering with Sparrow for employee leave management.
Creating an exceptional employee experience
Thirty Madison takes the same approach to employee care that they do with patient care: leading with empathy and settling for nothing less than exceptional.
“Our company’s mission is to transform healthcare, to make it accessible and affordable, to deliver superior outcomes and create an unparalleled experience for those we have the privilege to serve,” said Chelsea Trombino, Chief People Officer at Thirty Madison. “Our philosophy around employee benefits is directly tied to our mission.”
At Thirty Madison, employees don’t just enjoy comprehensive healthcare and wellness perks, they can also take advantage of generous paid parental leave, a customized return-to-work program after parental leave, flexible work scheduling, flexible vacation, and commuter benefits.
The company also developed a variety of programs designed to support their diverse employee population and encourage personal development and growth. Those include a variety of employee resource groups, lunch and learn events, and innovative training programs.
“We want to make sure our benefits are competitive with the market, but we also aspire to lead in the areas that align with our mission and vision,” said Trombino.
One example is the company’s action with fertility benefits. “Fertility benefits are usually fixed on a lifetime maximum and per treatment maximum,” added Trombino. “So we eliminated those maximums under our plans, ensuring employees who need fertility assistance can get the right care.”
Thirty Madison’s dedication to employee well-being has earned them a positive reputation for being a top place to work. In addition to being named in New York’s Digital Health 100 list for the fourth year in a row in 2024, the company was also named one of America’s Best Startup Employers and BuiltIn’s Best MidSize Companies to work for. The challenge: Managing leave without the right partner
Thirty Madison wanted to give their employees the easiest leave experience possible, but maintaining an efficient management system was an ongoing challenge.
Without a streamlined leave management platform and single point of contact, Thirty Madison’s People Operations team had significantly more administrative work. “Leave management became tedious and time-consuming,” explained Trombino.
Thirty Madison employees taking leave also struggled to navigate state leave laws, paperwork, and benefits deadlines without dedicated guidance. “Our employee experience around leaves took a hit,” she added.
It wasn’t long before Thirty Madison realized they needed a better approach to leave management. “The most important thing we were looking for in a vendor was trust. This isn’t just about navigating the complexity of leaves. It’s also about our employees feeling safe and secure during an important time in their lives,” said Trombino.
The solution: Choosing a trustworthy vendor to improve leave from every angle
When Thirty Madison decided to switch leave vendors, they were excited by other companies’ positive experiences with Sparrow. “We wanted a partner who would make the process easier for employees and easier for us,” Trombino said. “And Sparrow delivered on that.”
Thirty Madison’s People Team immediately felt comfortable, thanks to Sparrow’s expertise and reliability. “Sparrow is an extension of our team. We have a very trusting relationship,” explained Trombino. “We know Sparrow is going to do exactly what they promise, and that our employees will be taken care of.”
Thirty Madison’s People Ops professionals appreciate how Sparrow streamlines the leave process so they don’t have to be as involved in the day-to-day details. “With Sparrow, we don’t have to worry about micromanaging every step, we trust that everything is going to go smoothly,” said Trombino. “We know we have the right documentation and correct pay.”
Sparrow doesn’t just keep up with changing state-to-state leave laws to ensure compliance—they also handle leave paperwork for Thirty Madison’s HR and employees going on leave.
Taking over those areas has saved the company significant time. “We used to spend at least two hours a day fixing mistakes and trying to find answers, but now we only spend two hours a week on leave administration, at most,” Trombino said.
Thirty Madison has also seen major time savings with payroll. In addition to automatically calculating payroll, Sparrow sends out regular reports categorizing employee pay, so Thirty Madison’s payroll team can see a complete breakdown of payments.
Through it all, Sparrow maintains a clear, open line of communication with Thirty Madison’s people ops team, payroll professionals, and employees taking leave. “I love how communicative Sparrow is with our employees and managers,” Trombino said. “We don’t have to chase things down because they’re already in the loop from Sparrow.”
The result: Happier employees and more peace of mind
Partnering with Sparrow has reduced Thirty Madison’s administrative burden, streamlined their payroll process, and saved them time. Perhaps most importantly, though, Sparrow’s support has greatly improved the company’s employee experience.
“Sparrow understands that emotions and stress can be high during leaves,” Trombino said. “Sparrow takes time to articulate every step of the leave process and explain what employees can expect, so they feel confident going into their leave.”
Thirty Madison loves how Sparrow treats their employees with white gloves. “Sparrow understands that leave is an employee-centric situation where we need to treat people with care and respect,” she explained. “We want people to have a seamless leave experience so they can focus on what’s most important.”
Leave management doesn’t have to be such a heavy lift. Sparrow simplifies complex admin processes while supporting employees actually going on leave. If you think Sparrow could help your company, explore our offerings or book a demo today.
