Shayne (she/her) is a member of Sparrow’s Customer Operations team. Let’s get to know Shayne!
How did you get to where you are?
Stubbornness and a strong desire to be the person I needed when I was young! Growing up, my family was into traditional values, meaning that anything other than getting married young and having children was off the table. I knew that I wanted something different for myself so I set out on my own and worked odd jobs until I could afford to go to college. During this time I connected with my local community and developed amazing skills from my various jobs like haunted house make-up artistry, body piercing, indie video game development, dog training, and ultimately building my own career in art-based project management. As fun as many of these experiences were, this time was not without great difficulty. Having to navigate the world from a young age without much guidance, I often found myself feeling hopelessly lost when faced with complicated paperwork processes. I lost opportunities, benefits, and protections because of things I simply didn’t know how to do.
After college, I wanted to help people in some way that I needed help when I was younger. In my job search, I came across Sparrow and saw an opportunity to do just that. Now I get to help guide others through many of life’s complicated paperwork processes and make sure that they don’t lose any of those same opportunities, benefits, and protections.
What is a fun fact about you?
I once entered a talent show to play “Flight of the Bumblebee” on piano and won second place (despite not knowing how to play piano).
What is your favorite part of working at Sparrow?
My favorite part about working with Sparrow is my co-workers! In addition to being part of a collaborative and supportive team, I get to work with and learn from such patient, gracious, and caring people that I’ve found myself becoming more patient, more caring, and more gracious in my work, and also in my life outside of work.
What are you most excited about for your role in the next 6 months?
One of the most exciting parts about working for a startup like Sparrow (besides when new parents on leave send me the cutest baby pictures) is getting to watch as the company evolves. I’m really looking forward to Sparrow expanding its reach as it grows so I can help even more people… and get to see even more baby pictures!
What are you doing this weekend?
I’m going to go eat a burrito the size of my head and visit some art galleries. If you’re ever in the area, the Minnesota Street Project and the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Francisco are good ones to visit!
Have you picked up any hobbies since COVID started?
I have been slowly befriending the neighborhood crows with peanuts. Sometimes they follow me around the park. There are four that regularly come to my window and yell at me when they want peanuts: Buttercup, Rebecca Black, Sprinkles, and Hiccup. I love them.
