Kai (he/him) is a member of Sparrow’s Customer Experience team. Let’s get to know Kai!
How did you get to where you are?
Oof that is kind of a long story and a bit all over the place… I went to UC Davis as a Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior major (mostly because I watched too much Grey’s Anatomy in high school and wanted to be a neurosurgeon). I got to college and realized I can’t handle blood, so I changed to International Relations. While in college, I lived in Italy, traveled a lot, studied Fashion, and I also minored in Philosophy! After college, I traveled more, worked as a sous-chef, and then at the beginning of the pandemic, I became the GM. Randomly, one day I was scrolling through LinkedIn and saw a job post that asked how I felt about puppies, and who doesn’t love puppies? A few interviews later, here I am!
What is a fun fact about you?
My mom and I went to the World Cup in Russia; it was a hoot! I’m also a diehard Liverpool supporter. I rarely miss a match, and yes, I wake up for the 4:30am kickoffs!
Why did you join Sparrow?
Sparrow is full of kind, nice, genuine, and fun people. It’s also amazing that Sparrow’s goal and mission is to make a positive impact on people’s lives! I could probably list a thousand other reasons, but you’ll just have to see for yourself!
What are you most excited about for your role in the next 6 months?
Now that more and more states are creating leave benefit programs, we will be able to help even more people through the complicated intricacies of leave management! Hopefully one day the US will provide leave benefits on the federal level, so for now, we’ll just have to wait. In this role, there are always new things to learn and new challenges ahead that I look forward to!
What do you know now about working at Sparrow that you wish you knew on your first day?
Everything is going to be okay. It feels like you have to learn so much right away, but I promise you that is not the case. Everyone understands that it is a lot of information to take in, so don’t rush it. You’ll pick everything up in time, and everyone on the team is always around to help and support you!
What are you doing this weekend?
Exploring Recoleta and La Boca with some friends! I really want to improve my Spanish so I’ll be practicing that too. I’m not quite accustomed to the Fernet yet, so hey, maybe even throw in a few Aperol Spritz along the way!
What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?
That is tough! I’m very fortunate because my parents are flight attendants, which means I basically get to travel for free (if there is an open seat on the flight). I’m from San Francisco, so looking at a map, I’d like to say the answer is Moscow or St. Petersburg? Obviously, I know that the answer isn’t Melbourne, but that non-stop always feels pretty long!
